Pavements

General term for the part of the road normally used for vehicular traffic.

Road shoulders

Lateral areas of the platform bordering the outside of the roadway, not normally intended for vehicle traffic.

Sidewalks

Shoulder areas bordering roadways and specially designed for permanent pedestrian traffic.

Ditch

Open structure designed to evacuate rainwater from the roadway. Located between the shoulder and the embankment, it marks the right-of-way.

Platform

Refers to a road surface comprising the carriageway(s), shoulders and, where applicable, medians.
