Overview
ABSTRACT
Ageing materials, environmental attacks, the increase in traffic and loads are the many factors which may affect the main function of a bridge. Under such circumstances, it must be repaired or even replaced. In order to guarantee its solidity and allow it to fulfill its function, a reinforcement of its structure can be envisaged. One of the methods used by engineers and bridge managers is the addition of reinforcements. This article describes the various possible solutions such as the additional pre-stressing reinforcements and the addition of passive reinforcements whilst detailing the processes to be followed and the techniques to be respected.

INTRODUCTION
This dossier follows on from the articles on "Pathology and assessment of existing bridges"
An existing bridge was designed to provide a certain service. However, due to design and/or execution errors, ageing materials, environmental attacks, aggressive traffic, accidental actions, etc., the bridge may be in disrepair and no longer provide the intended service. It is therefore necessary to repair or even replace it.
In some cases, the load-bearing capacity and geometry of an existing bridge are no longer adapted to the new needs arising from increased traffic and loads. In most cases, this means reinforcing the structure.
