3. Safety factor and service stress

The safe design of a structure or component requires careful consideration of the relationship between applied forces (stresses) and the material responses to these forces. It is crucial to understand that the materials used in a given structure or component must never be pushed to their performance limits or "breaking point". For this reason, the concepts of "service stress" and "safety factor" are introduced.

3.1 Service constraints

Service stress is a stress applied to an element of a structure which, if exceeded, would lead to the failure of the element, or even the whole structure.
