1.1 Definition

In its initial state, before undergoing displacement, the soil has a configuration that reflects its geological history.

This phase is referred to as "resting earth thrust", meaning that there is no horizontal ground movement. The relationship between the effective horizontal stress and the effective vertical stress is established by the resting earth coefficient, denoted K0 .

This gives the relationship :
