6. Combating urban sprawl

Building with the site can also mean densifying an existing plot or neighborhood. For local authorities, dispersed individual housing has a number of negative aspects: high operating costs due to the dispersal of services (maintenance of roads and networks, public transport, school collection, waste removal, mail distribution, etc.), difficulty in ensuring a social and intergenerational mix, consumption of space, particularly rural space, energy and resources, soil sealing.... On the other hand, residential density has the advantage of encouraging more economical management of resources, space and travel.
