5.1 Stabilization or relaxation

Residual stresses generated during cooling of castings can cause distortion during subsequent machining operations. A stress-relieving heat treatment, often referred to as annealing, is used to minimize these stresses. This process involves a gradual increase in temperature, maintained between 500 and 650°C for a period of 1 to 5 hours, depending on part thickness, followed by controlled cooling at a rate of 20 to 40°C per hour.
