12. Acoustics

Laboratory and in situ test standards are available to verify acoustic performance. However, it is important to draw the attention of building owners and contractors to the technical limits of sound insulation. Up to 35 dB of insulation, the design poses no problem (by fitting suitable components, particularly glazing and other fillings). At 38 dB, it becomes difficult, and particular attention must be paid to sound bridges.

We sometimes see specifications of 40 dB, which is quite a feat in the laboratory, but once on site, there's little chance of achieving this performance. There are, however, solutions that can go much further: a double-skin façade. A traditional curtain wall is used on the outside, and 10 to 20 cm on the inside, a double sash or even a full-height aluminium or PVC frame is installed.
