1.1 General properties

  • Oxide and metallic glasses

    Formed over geological time, oxide glass exists in the earth's crust. Thousands of years ago, glass objects were produced by melting, shaping and cooling in the Middle East. The existence of these oxide glass objects is explained by the fact that slow cooling from the liquid phase generally leads to the vitreous phase.

    Metallic glasses, on the other hand, have only recently come into their own. Metallic alloys with an amorphous structure, also known as metallic glasses, are materials in which, as in oxide glasses, there is no long-range atomic order.
