2. Global design methodology

Power electronics design is a difficult process, whose many choices ultimately determine the dimensions of all converter components and their control.

For a given set of specifications, there is an almost infinite number of solutions for fulfilling the required function. Conversion structures are almost as numerous as the engineers (direct or indirect conversions, isolated or not, single or multi-stage, interleaving, hard or soft switching, etc.), and result in various dimensioning constraints on the components. What's more, the technological realization of the converter with these sizing constraints results in finished products that are more or less efficient in terms of efficiency, electromagnetic disturbance, or good use of storage components, and will therefore require larger/heavier/costlier coolers and filters.
