5. Cable carrying capacity

5.1 General

Conveying capacity is determined on the basis of the permissible temperature of the insulation in contact with the core (the hottest point of the cable), taking into account all losses inside the cable and heat transfer from the cable to the surrounding environment.

Generally speaking, we calculate the admissible current for a cable with a given cross-section; these calculations are carried out in accordance with IEC Publication 287. Conversely, it is also possible to determine the cross-sectional area required to carry a given current.
