2. Preventive measures against electrostatic discharges

This section deals briefly and in a non-exhaustive way with the means of prevention against ESD in the electronics industry. The means of prevention described in the standards are most often defined for a component sensitivity equal to or greater than 100 V according to the HBM model.

2.1 DES-protected areas

ESD control involves limiting the generation of static charges, and discharging these charges to earth, while limiting the discharge current to avoid damaging components.

Protected work areas (EPA: Electrostatic Protected Area) are clearly defined by ground markings and standardized signs, encouraging personnel to take precautions when handling ESD-sensitive components and equipment (ESDS: ElectroStatic Discharges Sensitive). In...
