Overview

ABSTRACT

Conventionally, the specifications of a filter can be explicited either within the frequency domain or in the temporal domain, according to the nature of the problem to be solved and the technology involved. This article is limited to the presentation of the calculation methods for the transfer functions of linear electrical filters with one entry and one exit responding to a certain range of specifications. These devices, which play a significantly part in the information treatment and transmission techniques, are classified into two types. The attenuation filters separate the useful signals from the unwanted ones; the corrective filters modify the form of the incident signals.

 INTRODUCTION

For an overview of filtering, please refer to the article Filtering and electrical filtering. Foreword [E 110] . This article is limited to a presentation of the methods for calculating the transfer functions of linear electrical filters with one input and one output, according to a set of specifications. These devices, which are of fundamental importance in information processing and transmission techniques, serve two purposes:

  • to separate useful signals from unwanted ones: these are the attenuation filters;

  • modify the shape of incident signals: these are corrective filters.
