2.1 Radio access network and core network
In 5G, as in previous generations, there is a clear distinction between the radio access network and the core network. The latter enables data transport over long distances and interconnection with the Internet. It also provides essential security functions and third-party services (notification). The 5G core network is called 5 th Generation Core (5GC).
The access network provides the means for terminals to exchange data and signaling with the core network. The radio interface specific to 5G is called New Radio (NR).
