3.1.1 Interface philosophy up to 4th generation
In the 1980s-1990s, networks were constrained by both link speeds and the limited processing capacity of nodes. In 1985, link speeds were 64 kbit/s, and a processor could at best process 10 Million Instructions Per Second (MIPS).
The network was organized into a small number of entities, each of which performed several functions. In a 4G network, the MME manages both access control and part of the establishment of connectivity...
