2. IEEE 802.15.4 protocol

The popularity of the IEEE 802.15.4 protocol makes it just as important as IPv6 for the Internet of Things, at least for professional applications. For consumer electronics, Bluetooth LE (Low Energy ) seems to be taking over. The protocol takes into account the characteristics of embedded devices: with low energy consumption, low memory and low resource processing. As a result, the protocol defines low data rates, low power and short-range radio frequency transmissions for WPANs (Wireless Personal Area Networks). On the other hand, this protocol has a number of features similar to other Level 2 protocols, such as Ethernet and Wi-Fi. The 802.15.4 protocol offers a reduced MTU of 127 bytes, which is very small compared with Ethernet's 1,500 bytes.
