1. 802.11 DCF mode

802.11 is an IEEE standard developed in 1997, and updated in 2007 and 2012. It defines the physical and medium access layers for wireless LANs. 802.11 can operate in the 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz frequency bands, and offers data rates of up to 600 Mb/s.

  • Various amendments have been incorporated into the 2012 version of the IEEE 802.11 standard. The main amendments found in wireless cards on the market are :

    • 802.11b operates in the 2.4 GHz frequency band and offers speeds of up to 11 Mb/s;

    • 802.11a, which operates in the 5 GHz frequency band and offers speeds of up to 54 Mb/s;

    • 802.11g, which operates in the 2.4 GHz frequency band and offers speeds of up to 54 Mb/s ;
