802.11 stations are organized around two network architectures: ad hoc and infrastructure-based.
2.1 Ad hoc architecture
An ad hoc network requires no pre-deployed infrastructure to enable communication between its members. Each station operates autonomously to ensure its own connectivity and the connectivity of other members. Flexibility of deployment is a major advantage of this type of network. This architecture is perfectly suited to ephemeral communications needs, or on moving scenes requiring rapid deployment and the ability to accommodate station mobility.
