4. Stereoscopic rendering

There are two types of 3D vision systems:

  • those requiring two images ;

  • those that can be exploited with just one.

4.1 Two-image stereoscopic systems

The first stereoscopic vision device was designed by Wheatstone in 1838.

A set of mirrors placed in front of the subject allowed him to see two disparate images placed to one side. The subject reconstructed the image in relief as if it were behind the mirrors.

The cumbersome system was soon superseded by the Holmes and Brewster stereoscopes.
