5. Virtual memory and operating system

In this section, we only consider the memory management part of the operating system, i.e. virtual memory.

Likewise, we are considering only a limited number of operating systems that are part of the history of computers and illustrate the evolution from virtual memories with segmentation and paging to flat virtual memories, using only paging.

5.1 Multics

Multics is an operating system created by MIT, Bell Labs and General Electrics in the 1960s, and taken over by Honeywell after the takeover of General Electrics. It was used until the end of the 1990s by the U.S. National Security Agency (NSA) and numerous universities. Its main property was a very large virtual space, including storage peripherals.
