2. What is a digital document?

Does the term "digital document" make sense?

It may seem totally incongruous to ask this question in a book such as this, and even more so in its "Digital Document" section. The very fact that the section exists at all naturally implies that the object it deals with does exist, and that it is a very special object in the IT sphere. Or, as an unconsidered hypothesis, that the very serious Techniques de l'Ingénieur editions are mistaken and are dealing with a "false" question in the sense that it doesn't exist.

To address these objections, it is imperative not to turn to some definition, but to define this concept and, more precisely, what exactly lies behind the expression "digital document". To this end, we have adopted a descriptive approach based on examples. These illustrate the use of digital techniques to create and produce documents....
