1. Hypervisor

What is a hypervisor? Simply put, it's a lightweight operating system optimized to run processes "emulating" another system, which may be of different hardware (e.g. the processor), in a specific, isolated virtual environment (memory, hard disk and peripherals).

This emulation can be software-based, in which case the hypervisor handles all the partitioning and transformation of machine instructions from the guest (the virtual machine) to the host (the hypervisor). But as processor technology has evolved, this emulation can now be managed at processor level by special instruction sets dedicated to hardware virtualization, boosting execution speed. These include AMD-V and Intel-VT. Readers wishing to expand their knowledge of these technologies will find a plethora of documents on the Internet.
