Several processes leading to the manufacture of phthalic anhydride can be listed. They are essentially based on the controlled oxidation of orthoxylene or naphthalene by air. This oxidation is always carried out using a catalyst. The most commonly used catalyst in industry is vanadium pentoxide, either alone or mixed with titanium oxide.
