2. Mercury process
2.1 Process principle
The basic principle of the mercury process (figure 11 ) is to produce chlorine in the electrolysis cell and soda ash and hydrogen in a separate reactor called the decomposer. At the anode, chlorine is produced by oxidizing chloride.
At the cathode, sodium amalgam is formed in mercury at a content of around 0.2% by mass by reduction of the Na + ion according to the reaction :
