2. Principles of flow chemistry

So far, we've focused on the characteristic dimensions of miniaturized reactors, without really addressing the notion of flow chemistry. In fact, the parameters discussed so far are virtually true for any miniaturized reactor, fluidic or otherwise, and depend only on their geometry. However, such a batch reactor would be particularly impractical to use, and would have ridiculously low productivity. Fluidic operation is the solution to these problems.

A continuous-flow process is one in which the reactants are brought together and reacted within the same time continuum, regardless of its duration. Excluded from this definition are stopped-flow reactions, where the flow of reagents is stopped in a dedicated cell where the reaction then takes place, or semi-batch reactions, where one or more reagents are gradually introduced into...
