1. Material characterization

In keeping with our bibliographic sources and so as not to disrupt the writing of experimental equations, we retain the units used: the inch (′′), or inch (in); the foot, or foot (ft); the short ton, or short ton (sht); and the pound (lb).

However, it should be remembered that :

  • • 1 inch = 1 inch = 2.54 cm

  • • 1 foot = 1 foot = 30.48 cm

  • • 1 sht = 0.907 t

  • • 1 pound = 0.4536 kg
