1. Phenol synthesis by the cumene route

1.1 Process principle

The process involves the following three exothermic reactions:

  • alkylation of benzene by propylene to cumene ;

  • oxidation of cumene to cumene hydroperoxide ;

  • splitting of cumene hydroperoxide into phenol and acetone.
