3.1 Stability of bleach solutions

Even at room temperature, bleach solutions decompose more or less slowly, releasing oxygen and/or producing chlorate. Remember that :

• decomposition rate increases with hypochlorite concentration and temperature;

• decomposition is catalyzed by numerous trace metal salts such as Ni, Co and Fe;

• the optimum free soda concentration is around 10 g/L.

• Bleach degradation with oxygen release

  The degradation of bleach with the release of oxygen follows the following reaction: $\text{NaClO}\to \text{NaCl}+\frac{1}{2}{\text{O}}_2$
