6.1 Issues

Worldwide plastics production (460 Mt in 2023) is rising steadily, and could triple by 2060. Unfortunately, only a small proportion (around 32%) of these plastics is currently recycled (figure 27 ). The remainder is either incinerated (around 43%), resulting in the emission of huge quantities of greenhouse gases, or buried (around 25%), resulting in heavy pollution by microplastics
