3. Optical properties of rare-earth complexes

To compensate for the low absorption coefficients of rare-earth ions, it is customary to use what is commonly known as the antenna effect . This involves using a ligand with a high absorption coefficient. The ligand is then excited and transfers its energy to the lanthanide ion, which in turn de-excites radiatively (figure 8 ).
