2.1 Definition
Strictly speaking, the lanthanides are a group of elements made up of the lanthanoids (the elements in the first row of block f), to which lanthanum is added. If we add yttrium and scandium, which are reputed to have similar chemical properties, we obtain the rare earth family (figure 1 ). In practice, the term lanthanide is rarely used
