Updated data on coal shale resources would be approximately as follows.

There are around 500 slag heaps in France, originally representing almost 1 billion tonnes of material, more than a quarter of which has been commercialized.

They are located in three coalfields: Nord-Pas-de-Calais, Lorraine and Centre-Midi.
