6. Conclusion

The new seismic zone standards NF EN 1998-1 and NF EN 1998-5 constitute the new normative reference frames, to which the national annexes for shallow foundations NFP 94-261 and deep foundations NFP 94-262 refer. Because of the wide range of subjects covered, these standards are proving to be complex to use.

The purpose of this article is to summarize the important points involved in the design of shallow and deep foundations. It does not deal with constructive provisions, which are insufficiently covered by the seismic Eurocodes, particularly for deep foundations.
