Overview
ABSTRACT
The Eurocodes constitute the new normative reference. Owing to their drafting principle and to their many technical subjects, Eurocodes can be awkward to use, leading to sketchiness in the definition of some subjects that need to be fully developed to be useable. The utility of this article is to provide practical help in using the standard NF EN 1998-1, associated with the standards NF EN 1998-5 et NF EN 1997 and the Order of 22 October 2010 for the design and sizing of shallow and deep foundations under buildings in normal-risk seismic areas. This article explains and extends the sections of the standard NF EN 1998-1 that define the soil conditions, seismic loads, structure analysis methods and construction provisions for shallow and deep foundations.

INTRODUCTION
According to EC8-1 (§ 1.1 ), seismic protection consists of ensuring that :
human lives are protected;
damage is limited ;
important civil protection structures remain operational.
Three types of design can be envisaged, involving different analysis methods, but also varying consequences in terms of performance and level of seismic damage:
elastic" design;
ductile" design;
or design based on seismic isolation and damping principles.
Depending on the context (seismicity, value attributed to the structure, strategic aspects, rescue organization), it is up to the client to decide in favor of one or the other.
