It would be a good idea to visit the site to record all the objects in their environment.
As with archaeological and other types of expertise, you could say "hurry up and don't touch anything", because you have to leave yourself the possibility of going back: from the outset, the "sampling" has to be beyond reproach.

in the case of exploded tubes or tanks, it is necessary to examine the probable chevrons, over metres of fracture;
in the case of cascading failures of a machine, such as a crash, we look for...
