estimating properties on finished products without mechanical testing ;
expertise in special cases, e.g. isolated samples whose properties are neither known nor easily measurable;
metallurgical engineering, i.e. the design of new or optimized grades for a given application; this is the most complex case, requiring quantified knowledge of numerous properties.
