    AUTHOR

     INTRODUCTION

    The intrinsic properties of a "material", the "design" of a part or complex assembly, and the way in which the material is "implemented" play a fundamental role in the "performance" of the finished part or assembly. This is illustrated by the diagram in figure 1 .

    The sequence of "material", "design" and "processing" leading to the creation of the final object should not be seen as a linear process, but as an interactive one between the three different components. Metallic and mechanical characteristics will largely influence processing techniques (stamping, machining, etc.), while corrosion resistance is more closely related to usage properties. As for design, it will not only have a direct influence on usage properties, but also on resistance to certain forms of corrosion.

    The complete study of the subject includes the articles :

    • M 4 540 – Stainless steels. Selection criteria and structure ;

    • M 4 541 – Stainless steels. Properties. Corrosion resistance;

    • M 4 542 – Stainless steels. Application (this article);

    • M 4 543 – Stainless steels. Manufacture ;

    • Doc. M 4 544 – Stainless steels.
