5. Alloying elements in steels

The influences of alloying elements that may be introduced into steels must be studied in relation to various parameters:

  • their solubility ;

  • their action on equilibrium structures;

  • their ability to form certain compounds (nitrides, oxides, sulfides and intermetallics);

  • their action on non-equilibrium transformations.
