Overview

ABSTRACT

The equipment used in all industrial sectors undergoes continual development; the foundry industry is no exception. Tool and die makers, who must possess a large number of technical skills, are required to combine technology and the cost price. This article addresses the manufacture of foundry tooling. Every stage of the manufacturing process is reviewed, from the digital programming of the machining process, to its implementation, including the final adjustment and assembly of the tool. To conclude, the prospects for the development and future of this industry are discussed, including the recent introduction of rapid prototyping sand casting or the manufacture of tools from powdered carbon.

 INTRODUCTION

This dossier completes the one on foundry tool design [M 3 585] by covering the manufacturing process right up to the end product, with an overview of manufacturing methods, the materials used and the industry's future prospects.

Here, we emphasize the importance of the role of the "toolmaker", whose main skills, in addition to those specific to the tools he designs and manufactures, are computer-aided design and manufacturing (CAD/CAM), machining, metallurgy and fitting.

Important: as the various foundry techniques used are very precisely described in other dossiers in Techniques de l'Ingénieur, we encourage the reader to refer to the following references: [M 3 500][M 3 510] , [M 3 512] and [M 3 540] .
