1. Different deformation modes

Sheet metals are very sensitive to the mode of deformation applied to them. For a given material, the forces required and the deformation capacities can differ profoundly from one mode to another, which is why we will approach the study of sheet metal formability by defining these different modes, using the terminology conventionally used in deep drawing.

1.1 Part examination

Figure 1 shows a simple part, a timing chain housing, which will be used to identify the main deformation modes.
