8. Metallographic aspects of the resulting layers

8.1 Case-hardening

Leaving aside the case of bainitic case hardening, the aim of case hardening followed by quench hardening is to obtain a carbon-rich martensite surface on a core with a bainitic or low-carbon martensitic structure.

In practice, a number of other constituents may be present in hardened and tempered layers :

  • residual austenite, a low-hardness constituent (≈ 150 HV), figure...
