6. Pre-treatment preparations

Parts prior to carburizing, or carbonitriding, may undergo various preparation phases that are essential, or favorable, to obtaining the desired results.

6.1 Cleaning before treatment

Parts are often greased before heat treatment to prevent oxidation during transfer. They can also be covered with machining products and forming lubricants (stamping, extrusion, etc.).

In order to prepare the surface, and in particular to avoid leaving polluted areas that could act as a screen during treatment, cleaning is generally carried out:

  • washing: just before processing, the parts are put into a washing machine, where they are washed in a generally alkaline detergent at 60-80°C, followed by a clear water...
