 INTRODUCTION

For some, enamel is synonymous with saucepans, stoves and water heaters; for others, with nail polish, toothpaste and paint.

The "Journal officiel" of Friday March 5, 1982 (no. 54) published a decree (no. 82223 of February 25, 1982), article 1 of which defined the word enamel and the scope of its applications.

" — Article 1 er : the names enamel or enamels are reserved for vitrifiable products resulting from the fusion, vitrification or sintering of a substance consisting of mineral materials. These products are intended to form, in one or more layers, a vitrified coating, melted at a temperature of at least 500°C.

These designations also apply to the substance in the various stages preceding its final state.

In the trade of products defined by the present decree, the use of the verbs enamel or vitrify and their derived words, with or without qualifiers, is reserved to designate the action of coating or decorating an object with enamel".
