1. What is nitrogen-enriched carbonitriding?

To understand what is meant by nitrogen-enriched deep carbonitriding, it is necessary to describe what is meant by standard carbonitriding. Until the 2000s, when carbonitriding was carried out, plan specifications required a nitrogen content of less than 0.3% at the extreme surface (with 0.1% N at 100 µm) for a carbon potential of around 0.75% carbon in equilibrium with the furnace atmosphere (figure 1 ).
