Heat in a continuous annealing furnace is transmitted by radiation and convection. For thin sheet metal, we verify that :

  • the temperature gradient across the strip thickness is negligible;

  • heat exchange by conduction in the strip is negligible.

5.1 Transmission of thermal energy by radiation

To establish the temperature-time relationship for the belt, we would need to know the temperature and emissivity of the furnace's radiant elements, and the emissivity of the belt.
