    ABSTRACT

    The low-durability glasses used in medieval stained-glass in Northern Europe usually display a poor conservation state. To preserve them, a research strategy taking into account both the atmospheric environment and the material was designed to gain a better understanding of their degradation. A comparison between ancient stained-glass and model glass was undertaken. The results show that due to rain, condensation and pollutants, glass undergoes scaling and cracks. After presenting the state of the art, this article details the analytical techniques and reports the main results. Finally, conservation-restoration approaches are described.
