5. Inspection of coatings

5.1 Upon application

In this article, we have demonstrated multiple times that one of the predominant factors behind the appearance of defects is the poor application of systems on site. Indeed, applicators need to deal with environmental conditions that can be unfavourable; these might include weather conditions (rain, damp, wind, etc.), structural operating conditions (as in the case of coating rehabilitation on a pipeline transporting gas), the quality of preparation of the work route or excavation. It is therefore necessary for the hiring firm to supervise the works. An applicator certification scheme to guarantee the quality of application, whether for the completion of new structures or the rehabilitation of existing networks, is currently being finalised.
