3.1 Concrete quality and processing

Although concretes have always consisted mainly of cement, aggregates, water and admixtures, their properties have improved over the course of history. Indeed, to meet the demands of designers and architects, the industry has developed new products, such as "self-placing" (BAP), "self-levelling" (BAN), high-performance (BHP) and even very high-performance (UHP) concretes.

However, it is with conventional concretes that the risks of deterioration, leading in particular to problems of reinforcement corrosion, are greatest. In all cases, the quality of the coating, and in particular its physico-chemical characteristics, the most important of which is compactness, plays a vital role in maintaining protection.
