2. Definitions
The prefix nano- (10 –9 ) defines the order of magnitude. We therefore expect to find, for nanomaterials, dimensions of material components on the order of a few 10 –9 m. It is interesting to examine the spatial scales of various “objects” around us, from the infinitely large to the infinitely small: there are nearly 40 orders of magnitude between the size of the Milky Way and that of a quark.
By narrowing the range from the macroscopic scale (our environment) of a few meters to the atomic scale of 10 –10 , we still have 10 orders of magnitude.
