4. Blending cotton with other fibers

To blend cotton with other fibers, these other fibers must have lengths and finenesses comparable to those of cotton. The most commonly used fibers are polyester, polyamide, polyacrylic and viscose. More and more blends are being made with other natural fibers, such as fine wools, linen, or a small percentage of cashmere. These blends are made either at the beginning of the large preparation process, or at the first draw frame, i.e. after carding.

Fiber blending is a very common practice in the spinning industry to achieve various objectives:

  • spin raw materials that vary in fineness, fiber length, etc., and obtain products of unvarying quality;

  • compensate for defects in one fiber by adding other fibers, thereby improving the average quality of the...
