Overview
ABSTRACT
Amongst the multitude of industrial activities, surface treatment is one of the dreatest consummer and polluter of water. The scientific literature deals with a large number of decontamination processes for polluted water such as precipitation, extraction, evaporation, electrlyze, cementation, ion exchange, adsorption on active coal, ultrafiltration and reverse osmosis. However, for economic and technological reasons, a large number of these processes cannot be carried out at the industrial scale, hence the necessity to develop new treatments. For this purpose, a new cyclodextrine-based material has been developed which containins ionic groups for an adsorption process which can be simple or combined with an oxidation.

INTRODUCTION

The literature reports a multitude of processes for decontaminating polluted water from surface-treatment industries such as precipitation, extraction, evaporation, electrolysis, cementation, ion-exchange, adsorption onto activated carbons, ultrafiltration, and reverse osmosis. However, for technological and economic reasons, many of the processes proposed cannot be used on an industrial scale. Thus, there is a need to develop new treatments. In this sense, a new cyclodextrin-based material containing ionic groups for adsorption-oriented processes alone as well as in combination with oxidation has been developped.

This project is the result of an original partnership between the Chrono-environnement laboratory in Besançon, two European institutes (the PROTMED institute in Bucharest and the Ronzoni institute in Milan), five manufacturers from the Franche-Comté region and the Agence de l'Eau Rhône Méditerranée & Corse. The project won an award at POLLUTEC HORIZONS in Paris in November 2011.
